Rachel Kesel of The Compact interviewed on the Money Blogger Podcast

My interview in this podcast is with Rachel Kesel, a member and spokesperson of the compact. The Compact started a little over a year ago as an informal challenge amongst a small group of friends to eliminate unnecessary purchases. They have recently received quite a bit of media attention, and thier group on Yahoo has grown to 7500 members. There is a strong environmental angle to their experiment, but in the interview we focus on the anti-consumerist perspective, and the interesting reactions they have received from friends and the media.

The comment that The Compact will destroy the American economy is ridiculous.

For a start, the vast majority of what Americans buy is now not even made in the US - it is imported. Check the labels on your clothes, your electronic goods, and jst about everything else. So by reducing purchasing, you're actually reducing imports and benefitting the US economy.

Secondly, the things people buy that *are* necessary (food items, medicines etc.) are more likely to be US-made. So by buying necessary items only, you're actually benefitting the US economy.

And since when was it anti-economy to live within your means? I seem to recall from my economics teachings that personal *savings* are good for the economy - and at the rate the typical American is spending, the members of The Compact are about the only ones who seem to be actually living within their means and saving at all!
