My guest for this podcast is Michael Mihalik. He's the author of a new book, Debt Is Slavery.

Michael's story starts in a common way: he got his first credit card in high school, and soon started spending beyond his means. After college he got a good job, which led to a higher credit limit, allowing him to spend even more.

Much of what Michael bought with credit were things of no lasting value. He realized he was left mostly with debt, not things, and ultimately he felt enslaved by the debt.

Michael turned things around and found his way out of debt by achieving a mental shift in his view of money. He describes some of this experience in the interview, and gives us a preview of the 10 of the lessons about money that he learned. The Compact started a little over a year ago as an informal challenge amongst a small group of friends to eliminate unnecessary purchases. They have recently received quite a bit of media attention, and thier group on Yahoo has grown to 7500 members. There is a strong environmental angle to their experiment, but in the interview we focus on the anti-consumerist perspective, and the interesting reactions they have received from friends and the media.

This interview is my first with an author who I think will be of interest to many of my listeners. Judith Levine is the author of Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping, a new book from Free Press.

Judith writes about the same core issue that many personal finance and simplicity bloggers write about - what we spend our money on and why - and also the flip side, what it's like to not buy the things that our consumerist culture often makes us feel that we can't live without. In her book she gives the topic a thorough examination through a project of avoiding all non-essential purchases for an entire year.

Judith's writing is immensely engaging, and the book is full of colourful characters, dramatic events, and profound insights. I particularly appreciate her insight that in a world of incredible choice of things to buy, we've found ourselves impoverished in imagination of what we could have. I hope this interview gives you a small taste of a book well worth reading.

iTunes and Other Podcasting stuff

The Money Blogger Podcast is now available on iTunes. There's a long story about why it wasn't on iTunes before. But I won't bore you with that. I do want to know, however, how many of you subscribe to this podcast with a podcatcher like iTunes or Juice, and how many just listen by clicking on the audio links on this blog site.

I've also had a couple of listeners point out some of the other features that could be added to my podcasts, like chapter markers, images, etc. I'd like your thoughts on these features. I'm way overdue for coming up with a logo. But what other features do you think would be good?

Money Blogger Podcast interview show to be launched soon

I'm an avid reader of several blogs in the fields of Personal Finance, Simple Living, and Frugality. A very active community of bloggers and commenters has sprung up in these fields with a lot of participation in the Carnival of Personal Finance, Festival of Frugality, and other online activities. The bloggers cover many of the same topics as well-known personal finance columnists from large media outlets. But they do it in a much more personal style, sharing things like their net worth and their financial mistakes and successes. I've found much better advice on topics like wise use of credit cards, the best online banks, and careful shopping from these bloggers than from any other source.

I thought it would be fun for the bloggers and their readers to hear from each other in a different medium. The Money Blogger Podcast will be a weekly phone interview with one of my favorite bloggers, and we'll cover everything from why they blog to their favorite advice on personal finance. I might even try to get some macro-economics bloggers to participate, since the connection between personal finance and global finance is one of my favorite topics.

I invite your comments about the podcast. And let me know what bloggers you would like me to interview, and I'll see if I can get them on the phone.
